While this isn’t usually an issue with our cool Irish climate, we forget how warm our homes can be with the heating on. Heat makes flowers lose moisture, causing them to wilt quickly and lose their vibrancy.

Keep Them Warm
There is a delicate balance between too hot and too cold when it comes to fresh flowers. While they should be kept away from heat sources, they should also be kept away from drafts. Make sure they’re kept inside away from freezing air. Keep them away from windows, especially if they’re open so there are no drafts.
Condensation on windows is not good for flowers so make sure your blooms aren’t touching the glass. Try to keep them in the centre of a room so the temperature is constant.
Water Often
The heat in our homes causes the water in our vases to evaporate much faster. Flowers with no water get thirsty, especially with warmer air. Thirsty flowers will wilt very quickly and they will lose petals and start to die within just a couple of days. Start with a clean vase, filled 2/3 with cool clean water. Replace the water entirely after three days and top it up when you notice it is running low.
Keep Them Tidy
The water is the main thing keeping your flowers alive, so you want to keep it clean and tidy. Strip off the leaves from the stem of your new flowers so that there are none in the water. If you allow foliage to sit in water it will quickly form bacteria and mould, killing your flowers. If your flowers lose petals or loose leaves, make sure to remove them from the water and refresh the water.
Keep Them Away from Fresh Fruit
It might sound unusual but make sure to keep your fresh flowers away from your fruit bowl. When fruit starts to ripen, it releases gases that are harmful to flowers. Ethylene causes cut flowers to age more rapidly, making them more susceptible to wilting and withering before their time. Ethylene can affect different species of flowers in different ways.
