There’s nothing quite like the joy of giving or receiving a fresh bouquet of flowers. Their colours, fragrance, and natural beauty instantly brighten any space. But as much as we love them, fresh flowers are delicate and need care to last. With just a few simple steps, you can extend the life of your blooms and keep them looking vibrant for longer.
1. Trim the Stems Immediately
Don’t let your flowers sit in the plastic they were delivered in. Cut the stems at an angle, about an inch from the bottom, to absorb water more efficiently. Cutting at a 45-degree angle prevents the stems from sitting flat at the base of the vase. Always use sharp, clean scissors or shears to avoid crushing the stem.
2. Remove the Lower Leaves
Leaves below the waterline can decay quickly, leading to bacterial growth that shortens the life of your flowers. Remove any foliage that would be submerged to keep the water clean and your blooms fresher. Check regularly and refresh as needed.
3. Use a Clean Vase
It might seem obvious, but starting with a spotless vase is crucial. Any lingering bacteria can contaminate the water and harm your flowers. Wash your vase thoroughly with hot, soapy water and let it air dry before use to avoid dust or residue from cloths or paper towels.
4. Feed Your Flowers
Most bouquets come with a packet of flower food – don’t forget to use it! It contains essential nutrients and helps prevent bacteria in the water. If you run out, change the water frequently and add a quarter teaspoon of bleach per litre to help keep the water clean.
5. Change the Water Every Two Days
Fresh, clean water is essential for long-lasting flowers. Replace the water every two days, and take the opportunity to clean the vase and re-trim the stems. This simple habit dramatically reduces bacterial build-up and helps your bouquet last longer.
6. Keep Them Cool
Flowers prefer cooler spots. Keep your bouquet away from direct sunlight, radiators, TVs, or other heat sources. If they’re on a windowsill, avoid contact with the glass. Also, don’t place flowers near fruit bowls—ripening fruit releases ethylene gas which can cause flowers to age more quickly.
7. Rearrange as Needed
Some flowers fade faster than others. Remove any wilting blooms to keep the arrangement looking fresh and to prevent decaying petals from affecting the rest of the flowers. A quick tidy-up can make your bouquet look refreshed in seconds.
