Spring is the perfect time of year to fill your home and garden with beautiful flowers. With so much choice it’s hard to know where to start so we’ve put together a quick guide to our favourite and the most common Spring flowers chosen for their for their colours, beauty, and fragrance.
Tulips
Tulips are always at the top of the list when it comes to Spring flowers. Chosen for the variety of colours, their hardiness and their beauty, tulips make a marvellous addition to a bouquet or displayed alone. Tulips herald the arrival of Spring and are said to symbolise true love. They last 7-10 days in a vase and open slowly showing the most beauty just before they wilt. You’ll most commonly find them in shades of pink or red but come in other colours too like blue, purple, yellow and white.
Daffodils
Daffodils are everyone from March onward, especially in gardens, parks, and wild green spaces in cities. They add a burst of brightness and cheer to even the dullest green spaces and are truly a sign of the Spring blooming season. Daffodil is the common name for the narcissus plant and generally symbolises new beginnings and rebirth. They come in varieties of mainly white and yellow with variations of buttercream, pale yellow, bright yellow, gold and two-toned. Be careful when adding them to bouquets. Narcissi sap is toxic to other flowers so stand them alone or wait for 24 hours before adding to the rest of the bunch.
Hyacinth
Hyacinths are arguably the sweetest-smelling flower of a spring harvest. They come in a variety of colours like cerise, pink, pure white, cream, salmon, deep blue, light blue and lilac. Each variety smells a little different and they’re often used in perfumes to add depth and sweetness. These early spring flowers bloom from November to May and have a vase life of around 7-10 days when in shallow water which is changed regularly. You should mist the petals occasionally to help them last longer.
Allium
The stunning allium is a late spring flower but available all year round and is a real showstopper. It is mostly used as an ornamental flower in wedding bouquets and interior design. It lends itself to décor because of its bright colours and unusual oversized shape. It is often used for brides-to-be as it symbolises patience and unity, both good traits in a strong marriage! Alliums come in shades of purple, lavender, blue, pink, pale green and white. Allium can be toxic to cats and dogs so don't put them anywhere that pets can chew them.
