Do you know how to preserve the life and beauty of your flower bouquet? If you’re lucky enough to have a bouquet delivered by someone who loves you to your home or workplace, here are some very simple tips to follow to make sure your fresh flower arrangement lasts as long as possible. Arrange a flower delivery in Dublin or nationwide from our local florist in Blanchardstown to be guaranteed the freshest blooms with a little Belles Fleur magic.
1. Unwrap your Bouquet.
If you’ve been surprised with flowers at work, leave your flowers wrapped in the original packaging until you get home. We’ve used a wet wrap system to preserve your flowers until you can prepare them for display. When you are ready to place them in a vase remove all wrap and packaging.
2. Clean and Cut the Stems.
Unwrap your flowers and lay them on a table, on the wrapping. Remove any leaves, debris or thorns which will be below the water line in the vase. This prevents bacteria from growing in the water and ensures your flowers will last a little longer. You should cut your stems from the end at an angle, so they don’t lie flat on the bottom of the vase. Cutting at an angle also provides a wider surface for water to travel up the stem, ensuring your blooms are fresh for longer. Recycle the plastic wrap and compost the stems.
3. Prepare your Vase.
Select a vase that is the right size for your bouquet, not too small and not too large. As a general rule, the vase should be about two-thirds the height of the total arrangement to properly support your flowers. Make sure to thoroughly wash and disinfect the vase before filling it. Bacteria is the enemy of fresh flowers.
4. Water.
Fill your vase with tap water. There is no need to add anything to the water unless a flower food packet comes with your arrangement. Arrange the flowers in your vase making sure each has room to grow, and they all have access to water. You can leave the string or elastic on the bunch or take it off for a more free-flowing look. Change the water completely every 2-3 days and replenish as needed
5. Position.
Where you display your flowers is very important to their longevity. Avoid direct sunlight, heat, bright lights and draughts as these will cause your flowers to wilt early. Flowers will last longer in a cool room and if you keep them out of direct sunlight. Keep them away from radiators or other heat sources like laptops or TVs. Admire your beautiful vase of flowers as often as possible.
Bonus Tip: Keep your flowers away from fruit bowls. The ethylene gas emitted from fresh fruit can cut the lifespan of your flowers.
